Dmix

From Void Linux Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Dmix extends functionality of ALSA and allows to play sound from multiple sources. This is functionality similar to what PulseAudio provides.

From Dmix documentation page:

PCM plugins extend the functionality of PCM devices allowing low-level sample conversions and copying between channels, files and soundcard devices. The dmix plugin provides for direct mixing of multiple streams.

Configuration

Note: Dmix is enabled by default for soundcards which do not support hardware mixing. Dmix is not enabled by default for digital output (S/PDIF) and will require the configuration snippet below.

Edit /etc/asound.conf. It should contain following lines

pcm.dsp {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix"
}
