Dmix extends functionality of ALSA and allows to play sound from multiple sources. This is functionality similar to what PulseAudio provides.

From Dmix documentation page:

PCM plugins extend the functionality of PCM devices allowing low-level sample conversions and copying between channels, files and soundcard devices. The dmix plugin provides for direct mixing of multiple streams.


Note: Dmix is enabled by default for soundcards which do not support hardware mixing. Dmix is not enabled by default for digital output (S/PDIF) and will require the configuration snippet below.

Edit /etc/asound.conf. It should contain following lines

pcm.dsp {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix"
